Der er borgerkrig i Sierra Leone. Fiskeren Solomon er blevet tvunget væk fra sin familie, og arbejder nu som slave i diamantminerne, hvor han en dag finder og gemmer en sjælden lyserød diamant. Den unge lejesoldat Danny Archer er træt af vold og korruption, og da han møder Solomon under et fængselsophold, overbeviser han ham om, at diamanten kan få dem ud af Afrika, hvis de arbejder sammen.
