Når det kommer til jægerfly og damer er piloten Pete Mitchell bare kongen. Trods hæftig konkurrence med kollegaen Kasansky står Pete til at vinde den eftertragtede jægertitel “Top Gun”. Men det hele går galt, da Petes ven dør. Heldigvis får han endnu en chance for at vise sit værd, da uidentificerede fly kommer ind i luftrummet.
